US Energy Dept. to review research programs

Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham said he wants to find out which of the department's efficiency programs are most effective, as recommended under the Bush administration's new national energy plan.
"This review will identify ways to improve the lives of Americans through energy efficiency while streamlining our programs and saving taxpayer dollars," Abraham said.
Abraham said the review will help determine the funding levels for research programs that have a record of good results and are modeled as public-private partnerships.
Environmental groups and many members of Congress have criticized the Bush administration for proposing budget cuts of more than 50 percent for some of the Energy Department's energy efficiency research programs.
A July 10 deadline has been set for the initial phase of the review, with the final phase to be completed by Sept. 1.
