Reuters New Jersey DEP to decide on trash transfer station - paper

Date: 17-Aug-01
Country: USA

The controversial plan for the transfer station was approved by county freeholders Monday night, after a heated public hearing.

The marine trash-transfer station would accept 10,000 tons of New York City's trash by barge each day, which would then be loaded onto sealed rail cars for shipment to landfills outside New Jersey.

A separate investigation on the project by a state grand jury and the Attorney General's office is also pending, regarding questions on how the multimillion deal was reached.

The DEP has challenged the facility's ability to handle such a large volume of trash and its impact on air pollution and local rail traffic.

Supporters of the plan say it would take trucks, which now transfer the trash, off already congested roads, create new jobs and bring revenues to Linden, where the transfer station would be built.
