Reuters UK floods last year worst since 1947, government says

Date: 31-Aug-01
Country: UK

The rainfall in autumn 2000 was the highest on record for September-November and the third-highest for any three-month period.

Records showed only 1799 and 1929/30 were more waterlogged, according to the study by the Joint Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Research.

It said rainfall and peak river flows have increased over the past 50 years but it was not yet possible to say if last year's deluge could be attributed to climate change as opposed to "natural variability".

"The work adds to our developing body of knowledge that will help government and others assess the likely impact of climate change," said environment minister Elliot Morley.

"We are seeking to understand when and how the effects of climate change may combine with floods which we can expect to experience on rare occasions in order to plan and manage our flood defences most effectively for the future."

Around 5,000 homes and businesses, mainly in southern England. were submerged in the floods, causing untold damage and misery.
