Bacteria killing tonnes of fish in Kuwait
Date: 06-Sep-01
Country: KUWAIT
"Tests on dead fish showed that the breeding of streptococcus bacteria in the sea water has triggered the death of the fish," Chairman of the Environment Public Authority Mohammad al-Saraawi told Reuters.
Saraawi said investigations into the cause of the spread were underway, adding that it might be untreated sewage flowing into the bay or fish-breeding areas.
He ruled out chemical pollution.
Although the problem seemed to be abating, Saraawi said a few fish were still dying.
Kuwait has banned fishing off its coasts as a precautionary measure.
