Sempra Energy Resources and Baja California Power Inc. have filed for U.S. permits to build the 230,000 kilovolt transmission lines to connect merchant power plants being constructed in Mexico with San Diego Gas & Electric's power system at the company's Imperial Valley substation.
Both Sempra Energy Resources and San Diego Gas & Electric are subsidiaries of Sempra Energy
In a notice published in Wednesday's Federal Register, the Energy Department said it would conduct a study to see how the power lines would affect a nearby floodplain and wetlands.
The department will take public comment on the project through Sept. 20.
