Big BMWs, Porsche sports cars and a brand new Saab model were the worst polluters in a test, which measures emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide as well as hydrocarbons, sulphur dioxide and other polluting particles, the Teknikens Varld magazine said.

Its tests, by putting more strain on car engines in various driving conditions, were more comprehensive than exhaust fume tests carried out on behalf of the European Union for an official classification of how environmentally friendly cars are, the magazine said in a news release.

The average of the Teknikens Varld's EPI-01 environmental pollution index for cars sold in Sweden was 115 points and the median 103.5 points.
