Reuters Singapore moves rare turtle eggs to hatch safely

Date: 10-Sep-01
Country: SINGAPORE

The eggs of the rare Hawksbill turtle, which normally take 50 days to hatch, were taken to the Nanyang Technological University in a delicate operation, the Straits Times said, quoting Lye Fong Keng, head of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in Singapore.

The newspaper said the find was the third reported sighting in a month of rare sea turtle eggs in the city state, which lies near one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, the Strait of Malacca, and is home to a busy container port.

The eggs were spotted by campers on Singapore's east coast beach park, an area popular with cyclists, roller bladers and families.

The report said the spate of sightings did not spell an increase in turtles laying eggs on Singapore's shores and a fair number of eggs were laid and buried unseen.
