Reuters Petrobras halts one offshore rig after small spill

Date: 20-Sep-01
Country: BRAZIL

A company spokeswoman said the rig in the Linguado field was producing 7,800 barrels of oil per day, less that 1 percent of Petrobras output in the oil-rich Campos Basin.

The rig would return into the operation as soon as the problem is fixed, she said.

According to Petrobras, a total of 18 barrels of oil, or 2,860 liters, leaked when a production pipe going from a well on the ocean floor to the rig broke early on Tuesday. The spokeswoman said the oil had been cleaned up from the surface.

Petrobras, Brazil's only crude producer so far, recovers some 1.4 million barrels of oil per day. A range of mostly foreign oil companies are in the exploration phase in Brazil.
