BANGLADESH: October 23, 2001

CHITTAGONG - Two wild elephants were electrocuted as they rampaged through a village in southeastern Bangladesh, police and forest officials said yesterday.

A herd of about 15 elephants stormed the village at Rauzan in Chittagong district, 300 km (188 miles) from Dhaka, on Sunday, pulling down shanties and trampling crops in the fields.

They also knocked down an electric pole with live wires attached to it. "Two of the elephants came in contact with the live wire and died instantly," one official said.

Elephants from nearby forests have killed almost 25 people in villages in the districts of Chittagong and Cox's Bazar since January this year, local officials told reporters.
