UK: October 23, 2001

LONDON - Few if any bears can pump iron or drive a car like Yingying the panda.

The 17-year-old circus performer is one of the stars of the Chinese Acrobats Arts Festival being held in Beijing.

Yingying is thought to be the only member of the panda species able to dunk a bastketball. He also drives a car, of the toy not the panda variety.

But his act has not pleased everyone. "The WWF believes that the right place for pandas is in the wild. They are an endangered species," a spokesman for the World Wildlife Fund told The Times.
