Developing effective storage facilities for hydrogen and establishing an infrastructure are viewed by industry experts as obstacles to the mass production of fuel-cell autos, which rely on hydrogen and oxygen, before about 2010.
"The BMW group will industrialise hydrogen technology and reputable suppliers such as Magna Steyr will help us on the way," said BMW board member Burkhard Goeschel.
The move is a sign of the increasingly close links between carmakers and suppliers. Last month BMW awared Steyr a contract to build its new X3 sports activity vehicle.
