Reuters UPDATE - Clint Eastwood's new role - Calif parks commissioner

Date: 03-Dec-01
Country: USA

California Gov. Gray Davis appointed Eastwood to the nine-member commission, citing the film star's record as a "longtime advocate for environmental issues."

Eastwood, who appeared in the "Rawhide" television series in the late 1950s, has had a lengthy acting and directing career, winning Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director for the 1992 film "Unforgiven."

Eastwood served as mayor of Carmel, California, from 1986 to 1988 and was a member of the National Council on the Arts from 1972 to 1978.

The Parks and Recreation Commission establishes general policies to guide the administration, protection, and development of the state park system. Commission members, who do not receive a salary, must be confirmed by the state Senate.
