Rampaging wild elephants kill four in India
Date: 20-Dec-01
Country: INDIA
"The deaths took place on Tuesday after two elephants got separated from
the herd and attacked the four people," S.N. Gupta, superintendent of
police of Jalpaiguri district, 600 km (375 miles) north of Calcutta,
told Reuters by telephone.
The elephants demolished seven houses and partly damaged three, the
Press Trust of India newsagency said.
Animal rights groups say elephants stray into human settlements in
search of food as development projects denude their native forests.
