Detroit River Wildlife Refuge established
Date: 24-Dec-01
Country: USA
A Bush statement said it was the first-ever international wildlife refuge in an area that has lost more than 95 percent of its coastal wetland habitat and been designated a waterfowl habitat area of concern by both the U.S. and Canadian governments.
Bush said the legislation enhances public-private partnerships for conservation and habitat restoration. An estimated 300,000 ducks stop in the Detroit River and feed during their fall migration from Canada and at least 65 species of fish live there, including millions of walleye.
