The officer told Reuters the 114-metre long Eastern Fortitude began leaking oil on Tuesday, shortly after sunset after it hit rocks about 17 miles off Sattahip in eastern Chon Buri province.
He said the vessel was on its way to deliver its oil and chemical cargo to the Thai port of Mabtapud at the time of the accident.
The officer said the ship's 23-member Filipino crew was safe and remained on board the vessel now anchored near the spill area covering a 16-km radius.
