Zhu tells Bush China GM rules meet global practice
Date: 25-Feb-02
Country: CHINA
"Mr. Zhu explained that the Chinese practices were wholly in accordance with international practices," Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan told a news conference in response to a question on the rules China will put into effect on March 20.
China has previously rejected U.S. requests that the rules governing genetically modified (GM) foods, which threaten $1 billion in U.S. soybean sales annually, be delayed or relaxed.
"At the moment, many countries in Europe and Asia have this system of labelling GM foods," Kong said. "What we are doing in China is actually the same as those countries. I believe Bush has a better understanding of China's policies."
U.S. officials declined to comment on the meeting.
