The campaigners have criticised the bank for backing projects such as the Three Gorges Dam in China and the Golud-Lhasa Railway in Tibet, which they say have huge environmental and social impact.The protesters representing Friends of the Earth, Free Tibet Campaign and International Rivers Network, demonstrated with placards outside the bank's shareholder meeting held for the first time in London at Canary Wharf where the bank has its offices.
Protesters have targeted Morgan Stanley's annual meetings in the United States, prompting speculation that the meeting had been moved to London to avoid them.
A Morgan Stanley spokesman said the decision to hold the meeting in London was to acknowledge the bank's global standing.
"Morgan Stanley is a global company with a significant employee presence in Europe. We are holding our AGM in London in recognition of the global nature of our business," he said.
