Reuters TXU leads Texas with 390 MW of wind power in 2001

Date: 23-Apr-02
Country: USA

According to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), Texas wind power production soared in 2001 with a record number of wind turbines erected in West Texas.

TXU added 382 megawatts (MW) of the 916 MW installed in Texas. One megawatt of wind energy powers between 200 and 300 homes.

TXU purchases wind power from four projects located in West Texas near the cities of Abilene, Big Spring, and Pecos County.

"Out of 1,000 wind turbines in Texas, TXU receives energy from 440. That's enough clean, renewable energy to power more than 80,000 homes annually," Bill Driscoll, TXU Vice President said in a statement.

In Europe, TXU is a partner in a 200-MW offshore wind farm in the U.K. and has purchased a 40 per cent equity stake in two wind farms under construction in Spain that are expected to begin power production by the end of 2002.

Globally, TXU has enough renewable energy to power more than 355,000 homes in the U.S., Europe and Australia, the company said.

TXU serves 11 million customers worldwide, primarily in the U.S., Europe and Australia.
