"We recovered a body from the debris and removed seven severely injured workers to hospital," a fireman told Reuters at the Globe Insecticides Limited factory in Gazipur, 40 km (25 miles) from Dhaka.
Police officer Jahangir Hossain Matbar said the cause of the blast was being investigated but he suspected "criminal hands behind it".
"The factory was in rubbles after we heard a big explosion," said M.A. Kader, deputy general manager of Globe Insecticides.
The death toll could be higher had the factory been in operations, he said. The factory suspended production since the middle of April for maintenance.
While in operations, at least 300 hundred people work at the factory which produces mainly anti-mosquito insecticides.
