Alliant's Iowa unit to build $400 mln power plant
Date: 02-May-02
Country: USA
The plant is part of Interstate Power and Light's $1 billion plan to add up to 1,200 MW of power generation in Iowa. One megawatt is power for about 1,000 homes.
A location for the plant, tentatively scheduled to begin producing electricity in 2004, has not been selected but sites near Mason City and Independence City are leading because of their proximity to transmission lines and gas pipelines, the utility said in a statement.
Interstate Power and Light, based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, said it was selected to build the plant after a review of bids, including proposals by independent power producers.
Twenty bids were submitted, with four companies making it to a short list, a company spokesman said.
The next phase of the utility's plan is to develop 150,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy like wind, solar and animal waste power, with a bid to be awarded in about two weeks.
Later this year, the utility will ask for proposals for a new so-called clean coal-fired power plant, and it also plans an energy efficiency push to save 200 MW to 300 MW, the spokesman said.
