South Korean firm to build Oman diesel plant

The 18,000-barrels-per-day (bpd) hydro-desulphurisation plant will take 18 months to complete with first production set for June 2004, refinery officials at the signing ceremony said.
"The plant will reduce sulphur from diesel in line with the government's efforts to free our environment from pollution," an ORC official told Reuters.
SK Engineering was awarded the contract from a short list of seven other foreign bidders - Japan's Chiyoda Corp and Mitsui , Technip of France, U.S. firm Petrofac International, Larsen & Toubro of India, Germany's Krupp Uhde and Italy's Tecnimont .
ORC started producing unleaded petrol in October 2000 as part of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states' agreement to switch to environmentally friendly gasoline by 2005.
The GCC is the regional economic bloc which also includes United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
