China Health Min to accept GMO applications in December

CHINA: July 11, 2002

SHANGHAI - China's Health Ministry said yesterday importers of genetically modified food can start applying for the ministry's safety permits on December 21.

"We have decided to accept applications to evaluate the safety and nutritional quality of GMO food imports from December 21," the ministry said in a notice posted on its Web site www.moh.gov.cn.

The ministry said in June importers would have to have the permits by January 1 in order to ship genetically modified organisms (GMO) to China. Officials at the ministry were not immediately available for comment.

The ministry's rules are the second after the Agriculture Ministry announced the first set last June, thrusting China's soybeans trade with the United States worth $1 billion annually into confusion.
