Under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, or EQIP, the government shares the cost of controlling manure and farmland run-off on eligible farm land."These additional funds will enable farmers and ranchers to enhance and protect our nation's soil, air and water resources for the future by implementing sound conservation practices today," said Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman in a statement.
All U.S. livestock operations are eligible for the program. But benefits are limited to $450,000 through 2007. Funding is split 60/40 between livestock and crop producers.
An additional $25 million in EQIP funds was available for ground and surface water conservation, USDA said. Some $50 million was announced for water conservation in the Klamath Basin in California and Oregon.
