Planet Ark World Environment News - in partnership with Colonial First State EU probing suspected Chile salmon dumping - Nutreco

Date: 27-Aug-02
Country: NETHERLANDS

The spokesman for the Dutch firm, Frank Van Ooijen, confirmed a report in Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that Nutreco subsidiary Marine Harvest Chile was one of four firms being probed after European producers filed a complaint alleging dumping.

"A complaint was filed and we will have to see what the outcome of it will be. But I can add that the bulk of Chilean salmon production goes to the United States and Japan and a very, very limited percentage goes to Europe," he said.

The investigation was expected to last around 15 months, Van Ooijen added.

The Commission said in July that it had received allegations from the European Salmon Producers Group about dumping of farmed Atlantic salmon from Chile and the Faroe Islands.

It said it would open an investigation to determine whether the product was being dumped and whether it was causing material injury to EU producers.

It did not say which producers were being investigated. (Additional reporting by Patrick Lannin in Brussels).
