"We're asking people to turn over a new leaf and go vegetarian," said Lisa Franzetta, a blonde American who represents People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). "It's the best thing we can do for the environment."

She handed out vegetarian food to delegates of non-governmental organisations about 15 km (10 miles) from the main venue of the August 26-September 4 World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Franzetta, who once dressed up as a tiger to protest at circus cruelty and stripped off to protest at leather, said every 16 kg (lb) of grain fed to a cow produced just one of meat. "It's a terrible waste of resources," she said.
