As mandated by the new U.S. farm law, $48 million will be offered through the Farmland Protection Program. The program allows USDA to enter into agreements with states or nonprofit organizations to protect farmland through the purchase of conservation easements.
USDA provides up to 50 percent of the appraised fair market value of the conservation easement.
About $275 million will be available to U.S. landowners under the Wetlands Reserve Program. The program will allow the government to protect up to 250,000 acres of wetlands.
