Planet Ark World Environment News - in partnership with Colonial First State Americans get free pass to US forests, monuments

Date: 19-Sep-02
Country: USA

USDA's Forest Service said all entrance fees and day-use fees for activities such as hiking and picnicking would be waived. Visitors would still pay for overnight camping, cabin rentals, permits, reservations and boat launches.

National forests encompass 191 million acres (77.3 million hectares) of land, equivalent to the size of Texas.

Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said the initiative was part of the administration's push for a healthier nation.

"National forests and grasslands are America's playgrounds and provide healthful outdoor recreation opportunities for millions of Americans," she said.

President George W. Bush, who runs most days and lifts weights to keep in shape, has urged Americans to walk 30 minutes a day, and eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in fat.
