Reuters Horrified visitors see bears kill zoo keeper

Date: 02-Oct-02
Country: BANGLADESH

Officials at Dhaka's Mirpur Zoo said keeper Ismail Hawlader entered the cage on Monday afternoon to feed the bears, as he had done hundreds of times before.

"Ismail had been feeding the bears for years. They were friendly and developed a loving relationship," one zoo official said.

"But suddenly the bears turned violent and attacked the keeper. They badly mauled Ismail, severely injured him. He was declared dead after being taking to hospital," he said.

Witnesses told reporters Ismail was crying out for help while being attacked.

Dozens of zoo workers and visitors gathered around the cage, but no one dared pull him out, one witness said.

There was no immediate word on the fate of the bears.
