Country: THAILAND
The officer, who declined to be identified, told Reuters the tanker Sky Ace, with an estimated displacement of 11,488 tons, suffered starboard damage near its stern after the pre-dawn accident a few nautical miles off the Thai port of Laem Chabang.
He said an unknown quantity of diesel fuel from the tanks serving the ship's engines spilled into the sea. Thai television reports also did not say how much fuel was spilled.
The Sky Ace was carrying about 6,800 tonnes of oil solvent and lubricants to a refinery at Laem Chabang at the time of the collision with the freighter Kotavichaya, registered in Singapore, he said.
The officer, quoting a marine police report, said the incident left the 31,504-ton freighter with a superficial dent near its bow.
The freighter was sailing from the Thai port to Singapore, he said.
