"To date we have spent around 200 million euros...a significant
amount, which will be topped up with European funds soon," Treasury
Minister Cristobal Montoro said in an interview on private television
channel Telecinco.Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar said on Monday the regions whose
fishing industry has been devastated by oil from the sunken tanker
Prestige would receive 265 million euros of EU funding.
The sunken tanker has disgorged more than 20,000 tonnes of of heavy
fuel oil since it sank last month. The disaster continues to kill
wildlife and is crippling the fishing industry that is vital to the
economy of the northwestern Galicia region.
Spanish government funding, which includes help for companies hurt by
the disaster and extra spending on promoting tourism and food products
from the regions affected, will not throw this year's budget off
course, ministers said.
