US to review wide range of federal regulations

USA: December 20, 2002

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration said on Thursday it will review 267 federal regulations covering a wide range of industries, from genetically modified foods to motor-vehicle safety.

The regulatory-reform wish list was submitted by industry, consumer and environmental organizations, local and state governments as well as academics and ordinary citizens.

The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has asked federal agencies to review them in the coming months.

The list of rules under review include energy-conservation standards for clothes washers; the use of hormones and antibiotics in the food supply; workplace-hazard protections; and staffing requirements for nursing homes.

Many of the proposed changes would help small businesses by encouraging competition for federal contracts and reducing paperwork burdens, OMB said.

The agencies will review the rules and the proposed changes and decide whether or not to pursue them, officials said.
