Black-listed freighter limps to Portugal port

PORTUGAL: December 23, 2002

LISBON - A damaged freighter blacklisted by the European Commission carrying fertiliser was due to arrive in a southern Portuguese port for repairs on the weekend, Portugal's navy said.

The Greek-owned Nestor C was being towed to the deep-water port of Sines, about 100 km (60 miles) south of Lisbon, a navy spokesman said.

The ship, built in 1979, is carrying 30,000 tonnes of diammonium phosphate, a non-toxic fertiliser. The Nestor C reported engine trouble on Wednesday and had taken on water in its engine room.

The Nestor C is on the European Commission's recently published list of ships banned from calling at European ports. The list stemmed from the sinking of the oil tanker Prestige off northwest Spain last month, which fouled hundreds of kilometres (miles) of coast.

The ship had been headed for Lisbon, the navy said. However, Portuguese inspectors who boarded the Nestor C decided it would need initial repairs before entering Lisbon and the ship was sent to Sines.

A Portuguese frigate is monitoring the Nestor C. The navy has been alert for spillages since the Prestige sinking.

The navy spokesman said the fertiliser was securely stored and there had been no leaks.
