Spain approves five new GMO maize varieties

The government's official gazette for March 11 noted that the new varieties were similar to two previously authorised strains, but could not be used for human consumption until EU approval was obtained.
Packaging for GM seeds meant for human consumption had to be clearly labelled "genetically modified variety".
Biotechnology industry association ANTAMA said the new varieties were of the "Bt" strain which is resistant to corn borers, pests that weaken maize stalks and stunt growth in corn cobs.
Last year, Spanish farmers planted 20,000 hectares out of a total 485,000 ha to genetically modified maize.
ANTAMA said the new gene-spliced maize varieties were produced by Syngenta, Pioneer, Monsanto (MON.N), Nickerson and Limagrain.
Spanish farmers have voluntarily refrained from pushing sales of even approved GM seeds in Spain due to widespread public concern, industry sources said.
While some scientists and producers contend that GM foods are perfectly safe, European consumers are generally concerned about possible health and environmental risks.
