Uttar Pradesh's chief conservator of forests, R.L. Singh, said about 12 elephants had been killed by speeding trains in Dudhwa and neighbouring parks in the past few years, prompting officials to call for restrictions on rail traffic in the sanctuaries.

"Among the dead were a male, a female and an elephant calf. We are now making making arrangements to bury the elephants," Singh told Reuters.

India has an estimated 30,000 elephants of which about half are in the northeast. Dudhwa has some 35 elephants.
