BRAZIL: September 5, 2003

SAO PAULO, Brazil - Fashion model Fernanda Tavares is the latest postergirl for animal rights, unveiling a new global campaign for the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in her native Brazil yesterday.

Following in the footsteps of supermodels like Christy Turlington, pop star Pink and actress Kim Basinger, the slender 22-year-old said she opposed cruelty to animals and stopped modeling fur in 1998.

But it wasn't until the militant group with a penchant for publicity stunts stormed the taping of a Victoria's Secret fashion show last year that she decided to join the cause.

At that event, PETA targeted her compatriot, supermodel Gisele Bundchen. Activists invaded the runway with signs that said "Gisele: Fur Scum" in protest at Bundchen's ad campaign for a fur manufacturer.

"Fashion is supposed to about fun, about being happy and this isn't happy," said Tavares.

The PETA campaign, which gets its U.S. debut at New York fashion week later this month, features a mini-skirted Tavares on a catwalk carrying a sign with the word "Fur" crossed out and the slogan: "Models should be the only foxes on the runway."
