Argentina Approves Herbicide-Resistant GMO Corn
Date: 14-Jul-04
Country: ARGENTINA
The long-awaited decision has sparked hope of a corn crop revival similar to Argentina's soybean boom which followed the introduction of Roundup Ready soy, a crop resistant to the pesticide glyphosate that Monsanto Co. developed to make production cheaper and easier.
The European Union, the top buyer of Argentine corn, has not approved glyphosate-resistant corn for consumption. But in May, the bloc lifted a five-year ban on new GMO foods when it authorized imports of another GMO maize known as Bt-11.
