South Africa Scrambles to Clean up Durban Oil Spill
Date: 02-Nov-05
Country: SOUTH AFRICA
SABC said the ship had been damaged off the coast of neighbouring Namibia and the oil had spilled while it was berthing at a floating dock for repair in Durban. It was not immediately clear where the ship was from.
SABC quoted disaster management officials as saying it could take up to three days to clean up the spill.
Port officials could not immediately be reached for comment but there were no reports of any major disruptions to traffic in Africa's busiest harbour.
Durban's waterfront and warm Indian Ocean beaches are also major tourist draws.
