Reuters Conservatives' Cameron Embraces Green Policies

Date: 12-Dec-05
Country: UK

"We need to have green growth - I don't want people to go and live like monks - but we need to have growth in the economy but we have to make sure it is sustainable growth and it's green growth," Cameron told BBC Radio.

The group, chaired by former environment minister John Gummer, will report in mid-2007 with ideas on how to deliver a green agenda. "The real test will come in 18 months time when we have to show we are prepared to accept the tough decisions necessary to meet the carbon reduction targets and other environmental challenges," said Cameron.

"I will take tough steps if those tough steps are necesary, and I believe they are."

He said he supported British targets for reducing carbon emissions by 60 percent by 2050 and that he wanted an independent audit office to monitor progress towards that goal.

He also said he would look at using biofuels rather than petrol in cars, which may require a change in regulations.
