New Swedish Air Ticket Tax Set at Minimum $12 |

STOCKHOLM - Sweden's government and parliamentary allies have agreed to set a new environmental airline ticket tax at between 96-430 crowns ($12-$54), depending on the class of travel, the Finance Ministry said on Thursday.

The tax is part of a deal between the Social Democrat minority government and the Green Party, which has demanded efforts to reduce climate change in return for supporting the government. Airlines have expressed anger at plans for more tax. "The tax will be levied according to the class the traveller is in and whether the destination is within or outside Europe," the ministry said in a statement. The minimum tax of 96 crowns will apply on journeys in the cheapest class within Europe, rising to 192 crowns for other categories of ticket within Europe and to 420 crowns for all other air travel. The tax will come into force from July 2006, but not apply to tickets ordered before June 1 for travel before January 1, 2007, the ministry added. Low-cost airline Ryanair has been one of the strongest critics of the tax, calling it stupid. Scandinavian airline SAS has also attacked it.
