Stripping out the impact of varying temperatures and adjusting for differences in the number of working days, demand rose 3.3 percent year-on-year. Spain suffered its worst drought on record in 2005 and hydroelectric power output fell to its lowest level in 48 years, the grid operator said. Water reserves closed the year at only 41.3 percent of capacity.
Spain's energy supply also rose in 2005, with installed capacity on the mainland rising 7.7 percent to 73,680 MW.
Wind energy and combined cycle plants were the greatest contributors to the increase in capacity, offsetting the fall in hydro production.
Gas-powered combined cycle plants made up 22.6 percent of total production in 2005, while hydroelectric production accounted for just 9.1 percent.
