Australia to set ballast water rules for ships

Australia had decided to act unilaterally following continuing delays in
implementing an international agreement on ballast water management,
Truss said in a statement.
"Pests coming into Australia's coastal waters through ballast waters
have already caused significant problems for our marine environment," he
said.
The new rules will come into force in mid-2001.
