Reuters UK okays dual-fire deal at Powergen plant

Date: 20-Sep-99
Country: UK

Conversion at the power station will allow it to burn gas as well as
coal, or a combination of the two. This will increase competitiveness
and a give a wider range of options to manage emissions, PowerGen said
in a statement.

The consent is in line with the UK government's policy for the
protection of security and diversity of supply, and allow a potential
reduction in power station emissions.

The UK government's policy is to limit the spread of gas useage at the
expense of coal in power stations to protect jobs in the coal industry,
and so there will be tight conditions for the use of gas at Cottam, such
as use for start-ups and limited periods of operation.

"We welcome this consent which could potentially increase the
flexibility of our plant portfolio and consequently improve the future
of the site," said PowerGen director Nick Baldwin.
