Europeans Aim to Save Energy, in Dark About Usage
Date: 12-Jul-06
Country: NETHERLANDS
Four out of every five citizens are concerned about climate change, with around nine of out 10 Portuguese and Spanish, according to a survey by Experian Canvasse Opinion among 4,000 citizens in four European countries, commissioned by Anglo-Dutch information technology company LogicaCMG.
Only one in four Britons believe they are doing enough to conserve energy, compared with three in four Dutch and two out of three Portuguese and Spanish.
Yet 28 percent of respondents admit they have no idea how much energy they used at any given time. They have a much clearer idea about their car petrol and mobile phone bills.
A majority of consumers, ranging from 60 percent in the Netherlands to 83 percent in Britain, believe that they would save more energy if they had a display showing their continuous energy consumption.
Many Europeans receive only one overview per year of their actual energy consumption.
Despite concern about a changing climate, a lower monthly gas and electricity bill was the main reason to conserve energy, the survey found.
