The former World Bank chief economist has made headlines in the last few weeks for his hard-hitting report on the environment saying governments everwhere had to take urgent action against climate change if catastrophe were to be averted.
Stern, 60, who has also served as chief economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, will take on the newly-created IG Patel Professorship at the LSE on June 1, focusing on India.
"I would like to thank Nick for his major contribution to the Treasury, leading the Government Economic Service and producing two path-breaking and influential reports on development in Africa and climate change," Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown said in a statement.
"Both reports have led to major policy changes of global significance. I congratulate Nick on his appointment to this prestigious academic post and wish him well for the future," he added.
