Norway's Naturkraft sticks to gas power plan - NRK

NORWAY: October 7, 1999

OSLO - Norwegian natural gas consortium Naturkraft will not back down from a plan to build traditional gas power plants despite new technology which could elimiate emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOX), NRK radio said yesterday.

Naturkraft, owned by industrial group Norsk Hydro , state oil firm Statoil and state power firm Statkraft, earlier this year shelved a plan to build Norway's first on-land gas power stations after authorities ordered it to slash NOX emissions by 90 percent and carbon dioxide (CO2) by half.

NRK public radio quoted Naturkraft spokeswoman Gro Mjellem as saying Naturkraft would pursue its original plan to build traditional gas power stations because it was cheaper than more environment-friendly methods.

She said Norway should buy CO2 quotas from other countries - as the Kyoto climate agreement allows - instead of applying expensive filtering technology.

Norway's centrist coalition government is opposed to construction of traditional gas power plants.

Norwegian companies have previously said they have found methods which extract CO2 emissions from gas power production.
