Owners to clean up power plant near Grand Canyon
Date: 07-Oct-99
Country: USA
The pact was reached between the owners and three environmental groups
and is subject to final approval by the U.S. District Court in Las
Vegas.
The Mohave plant is operated and 56 percent owned by Southern California
Edison, a unit of Edison International . It is located at Laughlin,
Nev., about 75 miles west of Grand Canyon National Park.
Other owners are the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (20
percent), Nevada Power (14 percent) and the Salt River Project (10
percent).
Southern California Edison said the settlement accelerates by three
years the planned installation of additional air emission controls on
the plant.
Under the terms of the pact, owners must install by January 1, 2006 a
sulphur-dioxide scrubber and a fabric filter "baghouse" which would
remove at least 85 percent of sulphur dioxide emissions and eliminate 99
percent of smoke-causing particles.
The environmental lawsuit was filed in early 1998 by the Grand Canyon
Trust, the Sierra Club and the National Parks and Conservation
Association. It alleged that plant operations were in violation of
federal and state air quality regulations.
The plant, which burns about six million tons of coal annually, began
production in October 1971.
