ZURICH - Swiss authorities have granted
permission for three genetically modified (GM) crop trials in
Switzerland, despite concerns the field research conflicts with
a ban on the use of GM products in agriculture.
|
The Federal Environment Office said on Tuesday scientists
could plant genetically modified wheat in fields near Zurich and
the western city of Lausanne. The trials will take place between
2008 and 2010, the office said in a statement. Strict conditions were imposed on the trials. The crops must
be in a fenced-in area and protected from birds. The trials will be conducted by scientists from Zurich
University and the Federal Institute of Technology. Swiss voters in 2005 approved a referendum imposing a 5-year
moratorium on the use of genetically-modified organisms (GMO) in
farming. However, research is still allowed.
