Daimlerchrysler to Invest in Batteries

GERMANY: September 12, 2007

FRANKFURT - DaimlerChrysler will invest heavily in battery technology to ensure it does not have to rely solely on suppliers for crucial components of its next-generation cars, research head Thomas Weber told Reuters.

"We will certainly not simply buy this key technology from just any supplier," he said in an interview at the Frankfurt International Motor Show on Tuesday.

He said the carmaker sought to strike cooperation deals that would let it exert influence on how batteries are developed and thus reduce the auto industry's reliance on a few Asian companies.

Mercedes holds several patents for the development of the lithium-ion batteries to be used in its first hybrid cars set to roll out in 2009, Weber said.

Hybrid transmissions that combine combustion engines with electric motors place increased demands on car batteries that have to store more energy and recharge more quickly than conventional batteries.
