BRUSSELS - Poland launched a legal challenge on Tuesday against the European Commission's ban on cod trawling in the eastern Baltic Sea, the European Court of Justice said.
|
The Commission ordered Poland in July to stop cod fishing, saying the country misreported its catch and exceeded EU limits for the threatened species. The ban has been raised as an issue in a campaign ahead of Poland's Oct. 21 parliamentary by Euro-sceptic parties. Poland's government has said it used only 60 percent of the annual quota and would appeal against the Commission's ruling to the Luxembourg-based court. "The Court of the First Instance has received a complaint from Poland, asking for an annulment of the Commission's decision on the Baltic Sea ... to ban cod fishing by Polish vessels," the Court said in a statement.
