China's CNOOC Eyes Offshore Wind Farm |

BEIJING - China National Offshore Oil Corporation plans to venture into renewable energy with an off-shore wind farm, China's first, the official Xinhua agency quoted the company's head saying on Wednesday.

The project would be 60 km (37 miles) out to sea, in the Bohai Bay, where the company has a large portion of its oil production, CNOOC president Fu Chengyu said. CNOOC aimed to be an energy company rather than just an oil company, Xinhua quoted Fu saying on the sidelines of a key Communist Party Congress in Beijing, where cleaner growth has been stressed by leaders as a top priority. "The national development mode decides the development of our company," Fu said, adding the company was interested in new energy, efficiency and renewable technologies. CNOOC Group is the parent of listed CNOOC Ltd. The company could not immediately be reached for comment on the project. Offshore wind generation is more expensive than onshore wind farms, but can often capture higher wind speeds.
